VFX is a staple in today’s big-budget productions. There are very few movies out there now that don’t rely on the magic of VFX. But, despite VFX being such a common ingredient in modern cinema, we rarely read or hear about the names that dominate this arena.

So, we decided to create a listicle of sorts naming some of the biggest VFX supervisors in the movie industry. These are also the ones that have won the most awards.

John Knoll

We begin with John Knoll. You may not have heard his name often, but, this VFX supervisor is a big deal. Want to know why? Well, he is the guy who worked on all the Star Wars prequels and the 1997 special editions for the earlier trilogy.

Apart from Star Wars, he has also worked on Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Mission: Impossible, and The Hunt for Red October to name a few.

He and his team won the Oscar for VFX work on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest in 2006.

Fun fact: John Knoll also co-developed Adobe Photoshop with his brother Thomas Knoll.

Ben Morris

Ben Morris is best known for his work on movies such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Gravity, Lincoln, and The Golden Compass. He won the Oscar for Visual Effects works on The Golden Compass in 2007.

John Rosengrant

Rosengrant is best known for his work on blockbusters such as The Avengers, Avatar, and Jurassic World. But, the move that put him in the spotlight was Real Steel, which won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2011.

V. Srinivas Mohan

Srinivas Mohan is a talented VFX Supervisor who has earned laurels for his work in the South Indian film industry. His work can be seen in commercial hits such as Baahubali: The Beginning, Sivaji, and Enthiran. These are also the same movies that earned him National Awards in the “Best Special Effects” category.

Andrew Lockley

This British visual effects supervisor is well known for his work on a majority of Christopher Nolan’s films. He has won the Oscar for Visual Effects work on Inception and Interstellar.

Some of the other successful films he’s worked on include The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010), The Dark Knight (2008), Children of Men (2006), Batman Begins (2005), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Die Another Day (2002) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002).
